Bugsy Malone - October 2006

Our production of Bugsy Malone was another huge success for Spotlight. The cast of 75 energetic and highly talented young people, once again, pulled out all the stops and delivered performances to remember. The audience comments at every performance were extremely complimentary and many, seeing a Spotlight show for the first time, said the standard was so good, they couldn't believe they were watching an amateur youth production!

Our set building and wardrobe teams worked for months to capture the overall look and feel of 1920's prohibition, and everyone agreed they had done a fantastic job. The set was (as always) enormous, colourful and multi-levelled, but this time, it moved as well! The addition of a giant revolve, spinning doors surrounded by dressing room style lights and giant flats that opened out for a scene, turned 180 degrees for another and then folded away at the side of the stage, all helped to make the scene changes flow into each other.
There were over 400 pieces of costume in Bugsy Malone. Most came from the Spotlight costume store, but the decision to have 16 dancers all dressed the same and with a costume change for act 2, caused a few headaches. Hiring was always going to be too costly so 2 mums came to the rescue and made all 32 costumes for us. Following our usual approach, everything had to be historically accurate, stylish, colourful and most importantly of all, the cast had to enjoy wearing them. A vast collection of hats, headdresses, jewellery, shoes, feather fans and boas, completely the look although keeping track of everything backstage proved to be a bit of a challenge.

On the final night, the cast presented the team with gifts and flowers to thank them for all their hard work and in return Graham Wilkinson the Director thanked the cast for delivering a fantastic show and for helping to enhance Spotlight's reputation even further.

His final words to the team were
